Types of Koi

How Many Types of Koi are There?

There are more than 30 types of Koi. They are classified by not only their color but their unique patterns.

The three most common varieties are in the "GOSANKE" category. They are the white and red Kohaku and the white and red with black Sanke and Showa.

What are Broodstock Koi?

Broodstock are domestic Koi. Our Broodstock from Uyeda Koi are the highest quality Broodstock in the United States. These Koi are bred from Japanese bloodlines. The High Quality Broodstock offered range from the normal varieties to unique colors not often seen in Japan. They are a better option for unique breeds.

What is the Difference Between Butterfly/Longfin and Standard Fin Koi?

From selectively breeding Koi in Japan with longer and larger fins, Longfin Koi were created. Butterfly Koi are typically domestic koi bred with butterfly goldfish. They all have extra long fins that move and flow as they swim. As their fins bend and move through water, it gives the essence of a butterfly, hence the name. Standard Koi have normal, smaller fins that stay the same shape as they swim without bending.

What Does Doitsu Mean?

The title Doitsu really means German-scale or dragon-scale. This most likely means that most of the fish has no scales or up to a few rows of scales along its body. This scale alignment came from Germany and can now be found in just about every breed and color of Koi. It is also referred to as Dragon Scale.
